About us
Thank You Have a Good Day is a collection, shop and creative studio formed in early 2019 by Alicia Yates and Gary Smith. Our studio is currently based in the Hudson Valley in a peak-roofed workers’ house which dates from the turn of the 20th century when Tivoli had a railway station, shirtwaist factory and a gristmill.
From our first inherited shop space in Fort Greene Brooklyn, to our flagship store in Red Hook Brooklyn to the launch of our own collection and then the newest brick and mortar Upstate in Hudson NY, the evolution of Thank You Have a Good Day has been an inspired one. We learn so much from project to project, and one collection to the next. Our vision continues to sharpen along with our skills. We are self taught, and eager to learn.
In April 2020, our first collection was born in our home studio in the stillness of quarantine out of both creative necessity and curiosity. It was a moment of pure spark when we made the decision to adapt our focus from curation to creation. Discovering we could work almost exclusively with existing materials — salvaged and sourced vintage and antique textiles we already had a longstanding love and appreciation for was game changing. The first piece Gary hand made in the studio from a piece of leather that had been discarded was a leather chore jacket. Lounge sets inspired by a pair 1960s mens pajamas I found at a friends vintage shop quickly followed. The collection grew to include caftans made from antique table linens and vintage fabric yardage, jackets and coats made from antique wool blankets, menswear inspired shorts and shirting using old French pillow ticking and more; all one of a kind, all made by hand.
